What is reflexology?

Reflexology, or zone therapy is the practice of stimulating points on the feet, hands, and head to produce a beneficial effect in some other part(s) of the body which ultimately improves overall general health. Reflexology is most commonly performed on the feet and often practitioners move onto the hands, arms, legs, and even the ears.

The art of reflexology is over 2000 years old practiced by ancient Chinese, Indian, and Egyptian cultures.  Dr. William Fitzgerald introduced this ancient therapy to the Western world in the early 1900s giving it the name “Zone Therapy”.  Today we understand that reflexology is based on a complex system that comprises over 7000 nerve endings.

The feet are divided into a number of reflex zones which correspond to these “energy zones” of the human body.  Through a process of applying pressure using specific massage therapy techniques to tight or “gritty” areas of the feet the corresponding part of the energy body is stimulated, assisting the self-healing process.

How does it work?

Massage focuses primarily on muscle and soft tissue.  Reflexology focuses on the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings via reflex points on the body.  There are roughly 7,200 nerve endings in the feet alone!  All these nerve endings are connected to various organs and other parts of the body by our spinal cord.

Our feet and hands are essentially mirrors of our bodies.  Each organ of the human body is represented in a particular place on our feet and hands.  Through proper stimulation of these reflex points on the body balance is restored to the corresponding body part.  Activating the nervous system in this manner reinforces the body’s ability to heal naturally.

What are the benefits?

Reflexology has been found to have significant positive impact for people that suffer from anxiety, high blood pressure, insomnia, depression, digestive disorders, poor sex drive, and a host of other syndromes and diseases.

All disease starts from an imbalance of energy.  Over time this imbalance literally cripples specific areas of the body and its ability to heal itself.  Left unchecked this allows the body to become a perfect place for bacteria and other infections to flourish.  When our bodies and our immune systems are functioning properly disease doesn't have a chance to begin.  Reflexology restores balance and promotes the ability of our immune system to heal naturally.

What can I expect?

foot reflexology
Treatment sessions usually last about an hour.  We like to begin by having you sit in a reclining chair where your feet are conveniently placed for the reflexologist to work.

The reflexologist will then use their hands to apply pressure to the feet. This use of pressure and the effect of the therapy are unique to the individual. We encourage you to let the reflexologist know if there are any tender areas or specific areas you’d like to address.

Origins of Reflexology

The origins of massage therapy can be traced back thousands of years and are evident in ancient writings of numerous cultures; Chinese, Arabic, Greek, and Egyptian to name a few.  During the Renaissance Era in Europe massage became widely used and for good reason no doubt and later was introduced here in the United States where it became wildly popular and promoted only to fall out of favor to technology advances in medicine in the 1930s and 40s.

More recently massage has had a resurgence as the astounding health benefits simply cannot be ignored or refuted.  While some might still consider massage therapy a luxury many now believe it to be an essential component to healthy living and longevity.  It is well documented that stress is the root cause of almost ninety percent of disease and has a profound impact on aging and our overall health.

It’s no coincidence that massage therapy just so happens to offset and reverse a myriad of poor health syndromes caused by stress that include anxiety, digestive disorders, headaches, insomnia, high blood pressure, and immune deficiency to name a few.
